JAMB has announced that 379,997 candidates will have to retake the 2025 UTME due to problems that occurred during the exam. JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, made this known during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

He explained that the problems were caused by a mix of human errors and technical faults, and apologized on behalf of the board. “It was a combination of human error and technology. We are sincerely sorry,” he said.

Out of the affected candidates, 206,610 are in Lagos State, while 173,387 are in the Southeast states of Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Anambra.

He disclosed that affected candidates would begin receiving text messages from Thursday, May 15, 2025, informing them of their new examination dates. The exam retake will commence Friday May 16th. He directed them to reprint their examination slips for the rescheduled examination dates.

The latest update on WAEC is that they have released the results for the Computer-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for Private Candidates, 2025-First Series. Additionally, the Federal Government has directed WAEC and the National Examinations Council (NECO) to fully transition to Computer-Based Testing (CBT) by 2026. WAEC has also announced that 574 schools in Nigeria have had their licenses revoked due to examination malpractices. 

The Federal Government has mandated WAEC and NECO to transition to Computer-Based Testing (CBT) by 2026, with the full implementation, including essay components, expected by the May/June 2026 examination cycle. Objective papers will be transitioned to CBT first, starting in November 2025. This move aims to reduce examination malpractices, enhance efficiency, and align Nigeria’s examination standards with international best practices.
