The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is in the process of transitioning to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format for its examinations, with a full migration expected by 2026.
KEY DEVELOPMENT
Phased Rollout: WAEC is implementing a hybrid model where objective questions are fully computer-based, while essay and practical questions are delivered on-screen and answered on paper. This phased approach is to ease the transition for both candidates and the council.
Government Directive: The Federal Government, through the Minister of Education, has directed WAEC and the National Examinations Council (NECO) to fully adopt CBT for all their examinations by 2026. This directive aims to curb examination malpractice and restore integrity to the national examination system.
Challenges and Concerns: Despite the push for CBT, stakeholders, including Educationists and parents, have raised concerns about the readiness of the country. Issues such as inadequate infrastructure in schools, erratic power supply, limited digital literacy among students and teachers, and potential technical glitches are major hurdles that need to be addressed.
WAEC’s First CBT Exam: WAEC has already conducted its first-ever computer-based WASSCE for private candidates, with a plan to expand this to school candidates. They have also introduced digital learning tools and a mock examination to help candidates familiarize themselves with the new format.
